What to Expect During Your First Massage at Kate Nichols Massage Therapy

If you’ve never had a massage before, you may have questions about what happens when you walk through the door. What should you wear? Will you need to talk during your massage? How much pressure should you expect? What if you feel nervous?

You don’t need to know exactly what to do before your first massage at Kate Nichols Massage Therapy. Kate will guide you through the process and give you plenty of opportunities to ask questions, share preferences, and make yourself comfortable.

Your massage should feel like a space where you can relax, breathe, and receive care on your own terms.

Before Your Massage

Your experience starts before you get on the massage table. Once you book your session, you'll recieve a secure intake form to complete before your appointment.

When you arrive, Kate will take more time to learn about you and what you want from your session. You can talk about areas that feel tense or uncomfortable, activities that affect your body, previous massage experiences, or anything else you think Kate should know.

You can also tell Kate what you don't want to address. You always have a say in what happens during your session.

If you have questions about massage, you can also visit the FAQ page before your appointment.

Your First Conversation with Kate

Kate will ask questions that help her understand your needs and goals. You don't need to prepare anything in advance.

You might discuss:

  • Areas where you feel tension or discomfort

  • How your body feels that day

  • Your daily activities and movement patterns

  • Your massage experience, if you have had massage before

  • Your preferences around pressure and touch

  • Any relevant health considerations

  • What you hope to get from your session

You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable sharing.

Kate takes an individualized approach to massage, so your answers help shape your session.

What Should You Wear for a Massage?

You don't need to wear anything specific for your appointment.

Kate will explain how to prepare for your massage and give you privacy to undress to your comfort level. You will remain appropriately covered with a sheet and/or blanket throughout your massage, and Kate will only uncover the area she works on.

You decide what feels comfortable for you. If you prefer to keep more clothing on during your session, this choice is completely normal.

Getting Comfortable on the Massage Table

You may lie on your back, stomach, or side depending on your goals and comfort. Kate will use pillows and other supports to help you find a comfortable position.

If something doesn't feel right, speak up. You can always ask Kate to adjust your position, change the pressure, add support, or approach an area differently.

Your comfort matters throughout the entire appointment.

What Does the Massage Feel Like?

Every massage feels different because every body and every session has different needs.

Kate will use a combination of techniques to address areas of tension and help you relax. You may experience lighter, soothing touch in some areas and more focused work in others.

You don't need to "push through" discomfort to get a good massage.

Some techniques may create a feeling of intensity as Kate works with areas of tension, but you should never feel that you need to tolerate pain. Tell Kate if you want more or less pressure at any point.

You also don't need to make conversation during your massage. You can chat if you enjoy conversation, or you can simply relax and enjoy some quiet time.

You Stay in Control of Your Massage

Your massage should feel collaborative.

You can communicate with Kate throughout your appointment. If you want more pressure, less pressure, a different position, or a change in focus, simply let her know.

You can also change your mind -- continuous consent is paramount.

Your body may feel different from one appointment to the next, and your needs can change as well. Kate can adapt your session accordingly.

What Happens After Your Massage?

After your massage, take a moment to transition back into your day.

You may notice that your body feels relaxed, lighter, or more aware of areas that hold tension. Everyone responds to massage differently, so give yourself some time to notice how you feel.

Drink water if you feel thirsty, move gently, and give yourself permission to enjoy a slower pace if your schedule allows.

You can also talk with Kate about what you noticed during your session and what you'd like to focus on during a future appointment.

A Welcoming Space for You

You deserve to feel comfortable and respected when you receive massage therapy.

Kate Nichols Massage Therapy welcomes people with different bodies, backgrounds, identities, and life experiences. Kate uses a thoughtful, individualized approach and works with you rather than making assumptions about what you need. If you identify as LGBTQIA+, you can expect a welcoming and affirming environment.
