When is it safe to get a postpartum massage?

After giving birth, your body has many new physical and emotional demands. As you recover from your pregnancy and delivery, you’re also now caring for your newborn - major transitions for your physical and emotional body. At Kate Nichols Massage Therapy, I am prepared for and eager to offer the support you need in order to rest, reset and feel more at ease in your postpartum body. Your postpartum massage may include swedish massage, myofascial release, face and scalp massage, and other techniques to support your postpartum period. I’ll work to calm your nervous system to a deeply relaxed state so you can rest and sleep better.

How soon can I get a massage after giving birth?

Most new moms can begin to receive a postpartum massage as soon as the day after giving birth! I will create a therapeutic massage session that is appropriate for YOUR unique stage of postpartum recovery. Maybe you’re feeling full-body soreness from labor. Maybe you’re feeling tension in your upper body from feeding and holding your baby. Maybe you’re feeling emotionally drained. No matter what relief you’re seeking, your massage will be tailored to your specific needs.

What positions are safe?

Together, we’ll assess the best, most comfortable position for you to be in during your postpartum massage. You may be feeling additional breast tenderness and swelling. We’ll use bolsters and towels to support you on the table and adjust as necessary throughout the session. Some new moms feel most comfortable in a side-lying position similar to prenatal massage. The choices are many and your comfort is paramount!

What will I do with my baby during my postpartum massage?

If you’re able to schedule an appointment while your baby is in another’s care - great! If not, we can make another situation work. Partners or caregivers can sit on a comfortable couch or bench just outside the studio door. If your baby needs to nurse while you are receiving massage, we can adjust as needed.

If you are a new mother who has recently given birth and are seeking expert postpartum massage, book a session today. If you have any questions about postpartum massage before booking a session, please email me at katenichols.lmt@gmail.com.
